The Perfect Poker Hand

When I refer to the perfect poker hand, I am not describing a perfectly played hand. Nor am I describing a perfect outcome. I am using the word ‘perfect’ in much the same way it was used to describe the unique circumstances that blended to make the ‘Perfect Storm,’ which resulted in tragedy for a New England fishing vessel. With regard to no limit poker, I am describing a perfect set of circumstances in which two or more players feel that they have a sufficiently good hand to push all of their chips into the pot, resulting in disaster for one or more players and profit for another.

Texas Hold’em Rules

Texas Hold’em, a game for between 2-10 players, is today among the most popular versions of Poker. The game has gained popularity, both in the US and abroad, due to its fast paced play and simple game rules. Texas Hold’em consists of 4 Betting Rounds. Throughout the game each player receives 2 facedown “Pocket Cards”. 5 face-up “Community Boardcards” are placed in the center of the Table, to be shared by all the players. Each player creates the highest valued Poker hand, using any combination of his/her 2 Pocket Cards and the 5 Community Boardcards.

The Importance of Table Selection

It is extremely important that every player be aware of table selection. Essentially, the concept of table selection can be explained quite simply: choosing games where you have an edge. You could be the 10th best player in the world but, if you only play with the top nine players, you will not maintain your edge. Likewise, you could be one of the worst players in the world but, if you play with those even less skilled than you, you can expect to win. A good player looks for loose games with weak players in them (this also create larger pots).
