It is extremely important that every player be aware of table selection. Essentially, the concept of table selection can be explained quite simply: choosing games where you have an edge. You could be the 10th best player in the world but, if you only play with the top nine players, you will not maintain your edge. Likewise, you could be one of the worst players in the world but, if you play with those even less skilled than you, you can expect to win. A good player looks for loose games with weak players in them (this also create larger pots).

Many beginners think that playing poker online will prove to be completely different than playing offline and they are sometimes correct, though usually for the wrong reasons. Common is the notion that it is much harder to “read” your opponents when you do not see them sitting in-person at the table. What most fail to recognize is that the majority of available information when making a decision comes from a variety of factors other than “reading” your opponents faces. To spot a tell from a player’s actions on a hand, and so forth, is often very difficult and not all players display such tells. Most of the required information comes from betting patterns, position at the table and observing the hands your opponents play.

 Discipline

In order to win steadily at poker, the most important skill to master is discipline. Indeed, all other skills are dependent on discipline. You must have the discipline to wait for a good hand, a good game, the right opportunity, etc. Discipline means that you do not play in games where you lack edge, that you refrain from playing hands that will get you into trouble, that you manage your money expertly and that you learn from your mistakes. It is imperative that you keep your emotions under control at all times and not go on “tilt”. Do not, under any circumstances, play drunk or when you are tired or emotionally troubled. As well, you should constantly ask yourself if you are playing your best game.
